Red Skelton, the famous American comedian, actor, and host, was involved in a plane crash on October 17, 1971. The incident occurred when Skelton and his pilot, Richard O. Dutton, were flying from Las Vegas to El Centro in California.
According to reports, the plane experienced engine trouble and crashed in a remote area of the Imperial Valley. Skelton and Dutton survived the crash but were injured and trapped in the wreckage for several hours. Eventually, they were rescued by a passing motorist who spotted the wreckage.
Skelton suffered multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured shoulder, and a punctured lung. He was hospitalized for several weeks and required extensive rehabilitation to recover from his injuries. Dutton, meanwhile, suffered a broken leg and other injuries but also made a full recovery.
The cause of the crash was never fully determined, but investigators suspected that it was due to mechanical failure. Skelton was reportedly traumatized by the incident and avoided flying for some time afterward. Nonetheless, he continued to perform and entertain audiences until his death in 1997.
